Bacon, Brews & Other Stories: Islington to Clerkenwell Breakfast Tour
Skip the hotel breakfast buffet for a taste of London mornings, the local way.
More than just another food tour, this experience is dedicated to the morning rituals of an area with a deep & eclectic past. The place where Charles Dickens reckoned London 'begins in earnest'.
Our first and flagship serving of London’s mornings takes you from the Angel, Islington down into the ‘village in the City’ of Clerkenwell, walking in the footsteps of a diverse cast of London characters from the Cockney Mystics to the Suffragettes, Medieval monks to Victorian school children, costermongers to caff owners, milk maids to muffin men - a history written in morning meals, punctuated by two substantial food stops, and two snackier stops in small, locally owned eateries beloved by Londoners and lesser known by visitors.
What to Expect
Meeting just outside Angel tube station (Northern Line), we'll follow the smell of bacon and roasting coffee through Islington and Clerkenwell, two neighbourhoods steeped, like a fine tea, in breakfast history. Over four small, story-packed stops and some walks to find the extraordinary in the ordinary, we’ll trace the evolution of the morning meal: from the monastery to the market, the workhouse to the workshop and to cake to café. Expect mugs of hot things, deliciously flaky things, and a few surprise things to set you up for the day in independent businesses quietly serving locals in the shadows of their glowier, showier neighbours.
Who It’s For
The early risers. The nosy parkers. The culturally curious. The lovers of finding the BIG in the small. The ones who've seen the big hitters and are looking for the hidden gems. If you believe stories taste better with a comforting side of carbs, this one’s for you.
Important Info To Help You Decide Before Booking
🍳 Every guest helps serve breakfast to children in London who might have otherwise gone without their morning meal through Toast Fork’s collaboration with the wonderful Magic Breakfast.
☂️Walks go ahead whatever the weather (within reason) and much of the walk takes place outside - weather appropriate clothing is key to making the most of it as London is bizarrely short of sheltered areas though I always do my best and we do have a couple of sit-down stops.
🚶🏽♂️ Bring comfy shoes and be prepared to walk on cobblestones, or up and down stairs for around an hour of the experience. Bring a reusable water bottle for responsible hydration situations.
🚨 Though vegetarians can be accommodated, other dietary requirements can be more challenging to cater to due to the historical context of this tour. If you have questions, reach out on hello@toastfork.com and we can either see what we can rustle up or I can point you in the direction of some bigger food tour brands that are more set up for it.
At Toast Fork, we never skip breakfast, neither should you.
